Module 2: The ABCD Learning Objectives Framework and Effective Web Searching

In this module, I learned about the ABCD Learning Objectives Framework and Effective Web Searching. Specifically, I learned about different search engines and how to use them effectively for my English teaching, as well as how to write lesson objectives using the ABCD framework.

Firstly, in this module, we had a discussion on web search engines. I was so surprised that my classmates shared a lot of new and interesting search engines that I had never heard of before. The one I found most interesting was Slideshare, mentioned by my friend Ha Tu. When I search for information on Google and YouTube, it often takes so much time to read articles or watch videos. On Slideshare, however, the information is kept concise using slides, so that it is much faster to go through the source and get the information I need. I think I am going to be using it more in the future, especially to search for academic information to finish my assignments in this PG program.

Secondly, we learned about the ABCD learning objectives framework in this module. It is a framework that helps us write lesson objectives suitable for our learners. The four letters ABCD stand for Audience, Behaviour, Condition, and Degree. Before knowing about this framework, I have already been familiar with two other frameworks for writing lesson objectives: the SMART framework and the Knowledge-Skills-Attitude framework. I think the ABCD framework has an advantage over the other two, which is its suitability for specific learners. As my lecturer mentioned in class, by changing the degree, we could better match the learning objective to the specific learners we are teaching.

While the ABCD framework is indeed a useful framework for writing lesson objectives, it is definitely not easy to write an objective based on it. In the Zoom session, I could see how a lot of my classmates were really confused when they tried to apply the framework. I myself was also confused at first, and I got the condition part wrong when I first applied the framework. Thanks to the lecturer's explanation, I was able to fix my objective. I think that I am going to try using it more in my future classes so that I can set appropriate goals for my learners.

Comments

  1. Thanks for your insightful sharing. I think each framework has its own pros and cons, but I think agree that the ABCD framework is more suitable. Its strength is the highlight of students' uniqueness. Each student is unique so it is logical to adapt objectives for each class using ABCD.

  2. I think the articles in the modules give us clear guidance on how to write ABCD objectives, they are very helpful indeed. If we read them carefully, I don't think there should be any problems writing good objectives.

Module 1: Creating an academic blog

In this module, I learned how to create my own blog for our ELT purposes. My classmates and I discussed the reasons why blogging is a good tool for ELT classes, and we got a chance to see each other's blogs in the breakout rooms.  I think that during the discussion on the Canvas forums, I could see a lot of ideas about what we could use blogs for, and what should I include in a class blog. When I have a look at the additional resources, especially the sample blogs part, I was also blown away by the numerous types of blogs created by many teachers and organizations for various different purposes. I think that those blogs are going to be really useful for teachers and students (myself included) on our English learning/teaching journey. My favourite blog is the one I mentioned in my reply in the discussion post: Film English  by  Kieran Donaghy. I really like the idea of using films to teach English, I think films really make English lessons much more interesting. On the oth...

Module 7: Action Project and Course Wrap-up

In this module, we worked as teams of three and did an action research project in which we had to make a change to a class we were teaching by adding a technological tool.  I think there were some lessons that I learned from this project. First of all, after doing this project, I have had a general idea of what action research looks like. Even though this project is not entirely action research, the steps to conduct it are quite similar to action research. We are also going to have a course about action research in our MS program, so I think the lessons I learned in this project is going to be useful when I enter the course in the future. Knowing how to do action research would also be beneficial for me in my job, as I could implement a technological tool in my class and critically analyze the results it brings. Secondly, I learned to use a new technological tool called ISL Collective . I knew about this website from one of my classmates in the MS program. The website lets us creat...
